Ivan graduated from McGill University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1981, he earned a Bachelor of Civil Law and a Bachelor of Common Law. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1983 and, in June 1997, attended the Harvard Law School Mediation Program.
Ivan joined Malach + Fidler in 1985 and is a partner at the firm. His legal practice is focused primarily on insurance and personal injury matters and he represents both plaintiffs and insurers. Since 2004, he has been actively involved in mediating cases that deal with statutory accident benefits, tort-related issues, malpractice and breach of contract. His mediation practice takes him across the province.
Ivan taught tort, contract law and civil procedure as a part-time lecturer at Seneca College's Continuing Education Program (Institute Program for Law Clerks), As well, he has lectured in a number of continuing education programs for the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Advocates' Society, the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, the Canadian Institute, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (in joint programs with the Law Society of Upper Canada and other institutions), and for numerous insurance companies.
Ivan is a member of the Canadian Bar Association (past Insurance Law Section Executive), Canadian Defence Lawyers, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Advocates' Society, the York Region Law Association (past Executive Member) and the Metropolitan Toronto Lawyers Association. Additionally, he was appointed the 2004-2006 Chair of the Bar Dispute Resolution Group Forum of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.
